Dedication

          I would like to dedicate my Bowden Fellowship in the Humanities research project to my grandfather, Samuel Oberstein, whose life story continues to fascinate and inspire me every day. He was one of the Cuban Jewish children who escaped Fidel Castro’s communist regime through Operation Pedro Pan, which is the subject of my research. Through hard work and much sacrifice, he was able to establish a good life in a free land. His tenacity to follow his dreams led to many of the opportunities I enjoy today. He encouraged me to discover my cultural identity and instilled in me the pride I feel as a Cuban Jewish American. My grandfather, and all he stands for, is at the heart of this website, which memorializes the journeys he and other individuals made to this country. Zayde ("Grandpa" in Yiddish), I dedicate this work to you; you are an amazing role model for me and all who know you.
